A 43-year-old man is behind the country’s first murder of 2019, police have alleged.

Police claim Marvin Martin carried out last Tuesday’s murder of Terrance Rolle aka “Cokehead”. He was one of two men charged with murder yesterday.

The Hospital Lane resident stood before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux on a single murder charge stemming from the New Year’s Day incident.

According to initial police reports, shortly before noon on the day in question, a male was walking with others on Market Street near CR Walker Senior School, when he was approached by a man armed with a firearm, who shot him before running away.

The victim was transported to hospital in serious condition, where he later died.

Martin was not required to enter a plea to the charge and the matter was adjourned to February 11 for service of a voluntary bill of indictment (VBI). Bail was denied and he was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services in the interim.

Meanwhile, a second man was charged yesterday with last month’s murder of security guard Mario Cartwright at a corner store in The Coconut Grove community.

Marlon Williams aka “Muggy” stood before Magistrate Turnquest-Deveaux on a single charge of murder stemming from the December 12, 2018 incident.

The 20-year-old Coconut Grove resident is also charged with robbing the store in question, Manda’s Variety & Wholesale Snacks, at gunpoint of $200 cash.

Cartwright was shot unexpectedly as he entered a corner store at First Street and Palm Tree Avenue, police said. It is alleged Williams’ co-accused, Paul Adderley aka “PJ”, shot and killed Cartwright as the two crossed paths at the store’s entrance. Cartwright died at the scene.

Three days later, on December 15, police said they took Adderley into custody while he was in possession of Jimenez 9mm pistol and six rounds of ammunition. However, during his arraignment last month Adderley claimed he was forced to confess to the charge of murder, alleging officers at the Central Detective Unit placed a plastic bag over his head and repeatedly stomped on his chest.

Williams was not required to enter a plea to the charge and the matter was adjourned to February 21 for service of a VBI. Bail was denied and he was remanded to the BDCS in the interim.

Both men have a right to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.
