IN recognition of its 111th Founder's Day, the Pi Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA)Sorority Incorporated is hosting its second annual island-wide Scavenger Hunt - 'Operation Island Hunt: Mission Pink and Green the Ivy.'

The event is set for Saturday, January 12, and it is expected not only to be a family fun activity, but also provide an economic boost for participating local businesses during this slow business period.

Jourdan Bowe, event chairman and vice president of Pi Upsilon Omega Chapter of AKA, said the organization is excited to bring the Scavenger Hunt event back to Grand Bahama, in partnership with the Grand Bahama Port Authority and Operation Island.

"We are here to bring awareness to the 111th Founder's Day of AKA Sorority Inc. Pi Upsilon Omega Chapter, and the event it is very important because it allows the community to also get involved and celebrate Founder's Day with us," she said.

Ms Bowe said that the Hunt will take place from 9am to 11am.

Teams must consist of five members. Each team must have access to one vehicle. There is a small entry and registration fee per person. The winning team will win a cash prize of $1,908.

She said the proceeds will go back into the community through the Sorority's international programmes. Ms Bowe noted that they recently turned over a new set of programmes to their new international president.

Some of the areas of focus from 2018 -2022 is to increasing college admissions in high school students, the arts, finding platforms and avenues for creators, women’s health and wellness, which highlights nutrition, breast cancer, and heart health, and global impact.

AKA Sorority, she said, also has partnership with the Lion's Club, and Soles for Souls.

Ms Bowe said they are also interested in building an economic legacy where they highlight entrepreneurship.

She said the chapter is excited to partner with GBPA and Operation Island.

Alfred Anderson, of Operation Island, said the event is expected to be even better than last year.

"This being our second time around we learnt a lot of lessons last year that we added to make the hunt bigger and better," he said.

Kim Miller, senior manager of Group Corporate Affairs at the GBPA, thanked AKA Sorority Inc and Mr Anderson for introducing such a great idea for the month of January.

She said that GBPA sponsored the Hunt because it is a fun event that is focused on family while providing some economic stimulus to businesses.

"This event pulls together family and close friends. January is also the slowest month economically and we want to support events such as these in the City of Freeport to counteract the slump in sales this time of the year," she said.

"It is great that we have our local businesses that have agreed to be on board, and we thank licensees of the GBPA, including Generali, for embracing the concept," she said.

Other licensees interested in participating should contact Ms Bowe or Mr Anderson.

Persons interested in participating in the Hunt can sign up by emailing missionpinkandgreen@gmail.com or Whatsapp messaging the number 801-2280.

AKA Incorporated started from humble beginnings as the vision of nine college students on the campus of Howard University in 1908.

Since then, the sorority has flourished into a global organization of over 290,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowerment by a commitment to servant-leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.

The Pi Upsilon Omega Chapter of AKA Inc, has been committed to community service and sisterhood in Grand Bahama for more than 30 years.
