NCAA Indoors: Track and field athletes have ‘impressive’ division one debuts

THE NCAA Track & Field Indoor season is underway and after a series of impressive debuts at the Division I level, several Bahamian athletes look to continue that trend this weekend with their new programmes.

Charisma Taylor brought her versatility to a new programme and has already notched early season wins as a member of the Washington State Cougars.

Taylor opened her season last weekend at the Bronco Invite, hosted by Boise State University, and took first place in both the 200m (25.34 seconds) and long jump (19 feet, 4.75 inches).

She spent last year as a member of the Arkansas Razorbacks in the SEC before she transferred to the Cougars in the PAC 12.

The Cougars will host the WSU Indoor January 18 at the WSU Indoor Track Facility in Pullman, Washington.

Samson Colebrooke is also with a new programme - the Purdue Boilermakers - and has recorded wins in both weekends at the Division I level. Last week at the Gene Edmonds Invitational at Lambert Fieldhouse in West Lafayette, Indiana, Colebrooke won the 200m in 21.74.

The previous week, the junior transfer out of Barton Community College made his Boilermaker debut at the Hoosier Open where he broke the meet record in the 60m in 6.68 and won the 300m in 33.87.

Purdue returns to action this weekend with the Larry Wieczorek Invitational hosted by Iowa. The two-day meet (January 18-19) will feature nine programmes, including Arizona, Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Janae Ambrose is also in a new location, a senior transfer for the Florida Atlantic University Owls. In her debut, Ambrose competed at the Vulcan Invite last weekend. She raced to a fourth place finish in the 200-metre dash with a time of 24.50. That time ranks fourth all-time at FAU.

The Owls will compete at the Gamecocks Inaugural Indoor Invite in Columbia, South Carolina.
