JARON Cornish delivered a standout performance for the Stony Brook Seawolves to give his team the win in the latest edition of the Empire State Rivalry.
Cornish made the game’s first score, the final score of the first half and the go-ahead three-pointer late in overtime to seal the Seawolves’ 67-66 win over the Albany Great Danes at the SEFCU Arena in Albany, New York, on Wednesday night.
He shot 6-12 from the field, made both three-point attempts and also added five rebounds and four assists in 35 minutes. It marked a season high scoring effort and his seventh time reaching double figures this season. Stony Brook improved to 5-0 in America East play, 17-3 overall and are now in sole possession of first place in the league.
Cornish scored five of the team’s first eight points en route to an early lead. Cornish made a layup with five seconds left to give Stony Brook a 33-30 lead at the half. Albany went on a 12-0 run and took an eight-point lead in the second half.
“This game was a street fight for 45 minutes. It was a battle and our guys were ready for it. Any time you can go on the road and get a win is great,” Seawolves head coach Jeff Boales said.
“Our guys are battle tested and tonight was another example of their toughness. We played in a great atmosphere as it always is here and we are really happy to come up here and get a win.”
The Seawolves are now 2-0 in overtime games this season. Stony Brook won its 10th true road game of the season, the most in NCAA Division I.
