AN American man died after the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a utility pole on Cat Island on Saturday.

While details were limited and his identity has not been released, police said shortly before noon the man was driving the motorcycle north along Queen’s Highway in the Smith’s Bay settlement when he lost control and crashed into the pole.

He received serious injuries, police said, and was taken to the community clinic in Smith’s Bay where he later died. Officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Traffic Division are expected to travel to the island to continue investigations into this incident.

This is believed to be the first traffic fatality on Cat Island for the year.

The man’s death came three days after traffic police in Grand Bahama began investigating a suspected traffic fatality in the West End community.

Police received a report of a bush fire in West End shortly before 11pm last Wednesday.

Officers from Police Fire Services arrived and found a four-door sedan that had apparently careened off the road into bushes and was engulfed in flames.

The fire was extinguished, and officers discovered human remains in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

Investigations continue.

I wonder how safe it is to give someone a vehicle they're unfamiliar with operating and allowing them to travel on roads they don't know under traffic rules completely opposite to their country of origin. A car still has some of the inherent risks but at least they know how to drive a car...
