Smith's Point to host festival

After a successful kick-off of Junkanoo Summer Festival last week in Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama, the festival will continue at Smith’s Point for the next few Saturdays.

According to tourism officials, residents and visitors can expect to see six junkanoo groups battle it out for best music, choreography and costume on August 3, 10, and 17.

The festival is a way for locals and visitors to experience the culture of junkanoo. Additionally, they will experience great food and native drinks, conch cracking and coconut husking demonstrations and Rake and Scrape entertainment.

According to statistics provided by the Ministry of Tourism, Grand Bahama is showing a 16.5 percent overall decrease year to date in foreign arrivals in May 2019.

The May 2019 preliminary report show air arrivals are down 2.4 percent year to date. There were 31,743 arrivals recorded, compared with 32,519 in 2018.

Sea arrivals were down 18.1 percent, with some 268,314 arrivals in 2019 year to date, compared with 321,441 in 2018.
