A SEVENTEEN year old is dead after a traffic accident yesterday.

Bernard Saunders was in the rear seat of a car when the driver lost control around 3am on Frank Watson Boulevard.

Three occupants of the car were taken to Princess Margaret Hospital and Doctors Hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.

Chief Superintendent Craig Stubbs, officer in charge of the traffic division, told reporters: “We had a silver Note traveling east on Frank Watson Highway when it veered off onto the southern, westbound shoulder of the corridor. The driver apparently lost control and collided with the casuarina trees that are situated on the southern shoulder. The vehicle then spun out of control and overturned (and) we had a female that would’ve been ejected from that vehicle.”

The fatality came a few days after a woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Sea Link Drive off East Street South.

Chief Superintendent Stubbs said a Nissan Cube struck two pedestrians in that incident.

“Based on the initial report from our witness, it appears as though it might have been the result of a distracted driver,” he said, adding a 22-year-old woman is in custody assisting police with their investigation.

In 2018, 69 people died from traffic accidents, a 28 percent increase from 2017 when 54 people died. There were 63 traffic fatality accidents in 2018 compared to 49 in 2017.

Everyone with a Note, Cube or similar vehicle should take note of how many accidents these vehicles have been getting in lately. I think because they are smaller vehicles, people overestimate their ability to quickly maneuver around traffic... usually to their demise unfortunately.
Condolences to the victim's family.

Very sad. Use of the cell phone while driving is also responsible for many tragic accidents and near misses. Perhaps driving and pedestrian safety should be a mandatory part of the school curriculum.

Lower your speed, wear your seat belts at all times, remember young people speeding does not make you a driver, driving sensible, staying alert is parts of being a good driver, these Japanese cars are efficient but they are soft and in high speed upon impact they will fold like soda cans when stept on,
