Jumpers lead the way at National Jr College Indoors

JUMPERS Kyle Alcine, Holland Martin and Denvaughn Whymns all soared to some outstanding performances in leading the way for a number of Bahamian athletes competing at the National Junior College Indoor Championships.

At the meet over the weekend in Pittsburg, Kansas, Alcine - a sophomore competing for Cloud County Community College - was third in the men’s high jump with a leap of 2.10 metres or 6-feet, 10 3/4-inches.

The winning height was 2.15m (7-0 1/2) by freshman Corvell Todd of Hinds Community College.

Martin and Whymns, in their sophomore and freshman seasons respectively at South Plains, got second in the men’s long jump with 7.62m (25-0) and Whymns, a freshman, placed third with 7.51m (24-7 3/4). Dodley Thermitus, a sophomore at Coffeyville Community College, won with 7.72m (25-4).

Martin also doubled up in the triple jump with a leap of 15.68m (51-5 1/2) for second behind Monroe College’s freshman Lloyd McCurdy, who won with 15.91m (52-2 1/2).

And Whymns was sixth in the final of the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.13 after he ran 7.99 for the second fastest qualifying time. Stephon Torrance, a sophomore at Barton County Community College, won the final in 7.87. Torrance had the fastest qualifying time of 7.91.

On the ladies’ side, Cloud County Community College sophomore Chanice Forbes was 18th in the preliminaries of the women’s 200m in 25.92.

Her team-mate Kenisha Stubbs, in her sophomore year, was 22nd in the preliminaries of the women’s 400m in 1:01.55.

And on the field, Dachey Stubbs, a freshman at Cowley College, was 15th in the women’s shot put with a heave of 12.38m (40-7 1/2).

Cherisse Murray, a sophomore at Central Arizona, took the victory in a new meet record of 16.30m (53-5 3/4).
