FINALLY, the wheels are moving for the Dallas Cowboys in free agency.
Taking their stance from last year, the Cowboys have been quiet and frugal in the first wave of 2019 NFL free agency.
Now they are beginning to be more active regarding talented veterans still left on the market.
• Here are four potential free agent signings for the Cowboys in the second wave of free agency.
WR RANDALL COBB
Meetings with wide receiver Randall Cobb, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, on Monday.
They’ll do so with the hopes of coming to an agreement for him to be a potential replacement to Cole Beasley, who agreed with the Buffalo Bills on a four-year, $29 million deal.
S CLAYTON GEATHERS
The club was hoping to land the services of All-Pro safety Earl Thomas when the free agency gates swung open, but his salary demand was far too rich for their blood.
Thomas signed a massive four-year, $55 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens that includes $32 million guaranteed, and the Cowboys weren’t prepared to pay that much for him.
To that end, they’ll now host a visit with former Colt Clayton Geathers — this according to Field Yates of ESPN.
Geathers is more of a box safety (strong) that would be looked upon as a challenge to incumbent Jeff Heath.
Instead of replacing talented second year safety Xavier Woods, he’d play alongside him in what could end up being a much smarter decision by the Cowboys. The 26-year-old is a former fourth-round pick of the Colts (2015) by way of the University of Central Florida. He’d arrive with definite potential but not without injury concerns, something the team would’ve also had in Thomas. Geathers had surgery in 2017 to repair a herniated disc in his neck.
S ERIC BERRY
Five days after he was released by the Kansas City Chiefs, Eric Berry is expected to visit with the Cowboys on Tuesday.
The five-time Pro Bowler is widely regarded as the best available free agent safety – a position of need on this Cowboys roster.
Berry is looking for his second NFL team after an amazing career in Kansas City. The former top 10 draft pick is talented, to be sure. He earned Pro Bowl honours in 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016, and he has been a three-time All-Pro.
He’s credited with 51 pass breakups and 14 career interceptions, including four picks during the 2016 season.
Berry was the inspirational turn in 2014, however, as he was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and missed 10 games during his recovery.Berry beat the illness just nine months later and was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year for 2015, racking up 61 tackles and two interceptions.
MALIK McDOWELL
McDowell, a defensive tackle, was a second-round draft pick (No. 35 overall) by the Seahawks out of Michigan State in 2017.
Just weeks before his rookie training camp with Seattle, McDowell suffered serious injuries in an ATV accident.
He has yet to play a snap in the NFL.
The Seahawks released McDowell on March 2.
McDowell is listed at 6-6, 299 pounds, and recorded 90 tackles (24.5 for loss) and 7.5 sacks, in 36 career games (23 starts) at Michigan State.
