The Bahamas reiterated its “steadfast” commitment to sustainable tourism at a regional United Nations (UN) meeting on the industry.
Joy Jibrilu, the Ministry of Tourism’s director-general, together with Michael C Pintard, minister of agriculture and marine resources, represented The Bahamas at the UN World Tourism Organisation’s (WTO) Regional Commission for the Americas and the international seminar on destination management - new challenges, new solutions. Both were held in La Antigua and Guatemala City, Guatemala.
This annual event, in its 64th year, assembled the ministers of tourism from the Americas region. It aims to address new challenges in destination management and the role of destination management organisations (DMOs), whose remit is being enlarged as part of the shift from promotion and marketing to a holistic destination management approach.
The summit looked at challenges within the tourism industry such as the “ideal” tourism governance model, maximising visitor value while ensuring the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism destinations, and leveraging the benefits of tourism for the local economy and residents.
In his communication as Commission chair, Mr Pintard thanked all members for their attendance and spoke about the significant role tourism plays in the global economy. He highlighted the efforts The Bahamas has taken to meet sustainable development goals.
“Our commitment to promote tourism in the most sustainable manner in order to safeguard the Caribbean for future generations is ongoing and steadfast,” said Ms Jibrilu. “We [the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation] are thrilled to have Michael Pintard join us and impressively articulate those efforts.”
The meeting was attended by representatives from Argentina, The Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peruand Uruguay. A large number of affiliate members, regional and international organisations, and special guests attended the event.w

Remind me again what part about increasing cruise ship visitors and building new cruise ship terminals is sustainable? Cruise lines have a plan to be fossil fuel free by what date again?
