Humility is a characteristic of “egolessness”, modesty, meekness, humbleness, deference, etc. and is often considered the exact opposite of pride. It is generally accepted as a virtue, something positive and desirable. In one of the Beatitudes found in Matthew chapter 5, Jesus said: “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5) This is an important passage as Jesus is letting us know that humility has rewards for us right here on earth, long before this earthly life has passed.

Psalm 37:11 (KJV) makes the same point concerning humility (and peace): “But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” These are very powerful words by David and affirms the principle mentioned above. Jesus constantly taught His disciples and others about the significance of humility, and He always demonstrated humility in His actions. Jesus taught His disciples to humble themselves as little children. (Matthew 18: 1-4) He taught His disciples to be ministers and servants instead of masters. (Matthew 20: 25-28) He taught His disciples that they should take the lowest position to enable them to attain the highest position. (Luke 14: 7-11.)

Scripture provides a plethora of examples of the humility of Jesus himself. He “took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”(Philippians 2:7) He was born in a stable and laid in a manger. (Luke 2:7) Jesus was a friend to publicans and well as sinners. (Matthew 11:19) He washed His disciples’ feet. (John 13:3-5, 12-17) Jesus cried when he learnt of the death of Lazarus. (John 11.35). Possibly the greatest act of humility by Jesus is outlined in Philippians 2:8: “He humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

There are several good reasons why the presence of humility is important in our daily lives: Humility facilitates forgiveness, indicates gratitude, opens doors, enables God to answer our prayers, and provides the basis for believers to enter God’s kingdom. Submission to God and His commandments recognizes humility and this is important; it allows us to receive God’s free gift of grace. We should always seek to remain focused on the scripture at the beginning of this commentary. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)
