The role of pastor is such an important and integral part within any church. The pastor has many ministerial responsibilities when it comes to his congregation.

It is essential for anyone who desires this gift to know if he or she was indeed called by God before undertaking such a momentous task. To care for the sheep of the Lord Jesus’ is significant for the edification and robust growth of the congregants.

We have too many hirelings gnawing away at the sheep for selfish reasons, and especially monetary compensation. Such a narcissistic attitude is repugnant to God.

The promise of power is sometimes tantalising for those seeking prestige as they guide the flock.

1 Peter 5:1-4 says: “The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fades not away.”

Apostle Peter talks about the bureaucracy and parameters of pastoring. It’s not and shouldn’t be a stepping stone into one’s selfish aspirations and dreams. A pastor should be gentle and courteous, not ornery or cantankerous in attitude; filled with the love of God for the sheep, whether good or bad.

So many labour under with the misconception that pastoring is about getting rich. But it’s really about living a selfless life committed to the flock; living a consecrated life of holiness which is evident for all in the community to see.

So many are preaching what they’re not living within the confines of their homes, pretending to their congregants in public. How many pastors’ kids could say without a doubt that their father is truly saved?

Listen, the pastorship is a very difficult ministry to undertake. How many of our pastors are not called to it?

Jeremiah 23:1-2 states: “Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture! saith the Lord. Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed My people; Ye have scattered My flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the Lord.”

Such a poignant warning to those who have scattered the sheep thanks to their greed and lust. So many have been discouraged, felt discontented and deterred by the leaders who are responsible for the spiritual nourishment of the Church. But at the end of the day we must all pray for the our spiritual leaders no matter what.
