THE PRESS BOX: Cowboys get Bennett from Patriots for late-round pick

By INIGO 'NAUGHTY' ZENICAZELAYA

AS the NFL trade deadline rapidly approaches, the Dallas Cowboys made a move yesterday, acquiring three-time Pro Bowl DE Michael Bennett from the New England Patriots.

And the Cowboys are rumoured to be active players in the trade market, right up until the trade deadline.

DEFENSIVE END

MICHAEL BENNETT

The Patriots have traded defensive end Michael Bennett to the Dallas Cowboys, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter said the Patriots will receive a 7th round pick that can go to a 6th-round pick in 2021.

The move comes two days after Bennett was added back to the Patriots’ active roster after serving a one-game suspension for what he said was a “philosophical disagreement” with defensive line coach Bret Bielema.

Bennett saw his playing time diminish throughout the season.

Bennett began the season by playing in 55 per cent of the defensive snaps (37 plays) in the Patriots’ season-opening win over Pittsburgh.

But his playing time has steadily decreased since then, falling to just 11 snaps (22 per cent) against the Giants in Week 6.

Last season with the Eagles he had nine sacks, 30 quarterback hits and 34 tackles, including 15 for a loss.

The move means Bennett will have a chance to stick it to his former team in Gillette Stadium when the Patriots host Dallas on November 24.

But wait there’s more.

The Cowboys may not be done raiding the AFC East for defensive talent.

Rumours have it that Jets uber talented safety Jamal Adams is also on the Cowboys’ trade radar.

SAFETY

JAMAL ADAMS

Dallas Cowboys fans have been coveting Jets safety Jamal Adams for a while now. The third-year safety has quickly established himself as one of the best DBs in the game and his disgruntled status on a losing team makes him possibly available, no matter what the franchise publicly states. Adams is the do-it-all, play-making safety that can play back in two-deep, man up over the slot or TE, and/or play the thumper in the box.

He would pair perfectly with Xavier Woods as the two divide duties and disguise coverage.

Adams, a former top-10 pick, would most certainly cost a first-round pick and some change.

Adams would probably end up costing the Cowboys two top-100 picks (with a first rounder all but assured).

Also Adams is still under contract through 2021, so a new contract doesn’t have to happen immediately.

An All-Pro to man that second safety spot would drastically change this Dallas team for the better.

However, given the Cowboys’ history addressing the position, plus the cost of doing business, makes this a pretty big long-shot.
