THE Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association congratulates coach Chelsi Russell, who received a six-week scholarship from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Olympic Solidarity for Coaches to participate in the ITF Coaching Advanced Players Course (Level II) in Valencia, Spain.
“We pray for a fruitful course and a safe return for Chelsi,” the BLTA said in a press release.
Russell was recommended by John Goede, the ITF development officer for the Caribbean.
The Bahamas Olympic Committee graciously facilitated arrangements for Russell on behalf of the ITF Olympic Solidarity Scholarships for Coaches.
Russell will be participating in the practice and coaching at the academy, practical on-court sessions - level of play, group lessons and individual lessons, theoretical sessions in the lecture room and personal work.
Modules of the course include the coach, advanced training, bio-mechanics and technique, sport science, and periodisation and planning.
The course is rigorous and challenging. “Continuous development of coaches is the key to the effective and efficient development of players,” Russell said.
“After making the decision to broaden my coaches education by pursuing my Level 1 coaching certification under the ITF curriculum, my mind was opened to new teaching methodologies, new approaches, and modern knowledge within the sport of tennis. “This information enabled me to better my coaching skills and better apply techniques to assist in the improvement, whether minor or major, of every player I come in contact with.”
Relative to her plans after completion, Russell said she hopes to work with the association in establishing a development plan for tennis players and coaches of all skill levels to increase retention and joy within the sport.
“Through this opportunity of exposure, I hope to evoke a positive shift within the Bahamian tennis community and bridge the gap between opportunities connected to tennis and all persons willing to learn and advance themselves,” she said.
The BLTA wishes Chelsi a productive time as she develops her coaching skills.
