ERIC Gordon has often touted his Bahamian connection and that connection has inspired him to join the Hurricane Dorian relief effort.
The Houston Rockets guard pledged $50,000 and partnered with Abaco Outreach/SBP to establish an online fundraiser to assist the recovery efforts in Grand Bahama and Abaco.
“My mom (Denise Gordon) and her side of the family are descendants of the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas, which was decimated by Hurricane Dorian. Thankfully, everyone in my family is safe, but the Bahamians need our help more than ever,” he said.
“As this is an issue close to my heart, I will be donating $50,000 to SBP and Abaco Outreach. They have workers on the ground providing direct relief in the form of generators, medical supplies, food and much more to the people of the Abaco Islands and Freeport. If anyone else would like to support the relief efforts in the Bahamas, please join me in donating to this cause and helping me reach my goal. Each dollar counts and all help is beyond appreciated.”
Gordon is often in the Bahamas during the NBA offseason and makes regular appearances at the Jeff Rodgers Basketball Camp.
“I have a lot of friends and family here, so I enjoy coming here,” Gordon said at last year’s event. “This will always be my second home or my home away from home for me. Basketball continues to grow here and so it’s fun to be able to make a contribution.”
Earlier this summer, Gordon was in the Bahamas with backcourt mate James Harden for a series of workouts.
Gordon recently signed a multi-year contract extension with the Rockets worth up to $76 million in additional money. He averaged 16.8 points in 31.3 minutes per game across three seasons in Houston, and shot 36.4 per cent from beyond the arc.
Gordon won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award in the 2016-17 season.
