A 35-year-old man who threatened to “blow off” his ex-girlfriend’s head during an argument was sentenced to a month in prison.

Kevin McKenzie was arrested after he threatened to harm the mother of his child on December 3. He admitted to the offence during a hearing before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

The court was told that the complainant was at her residence around 8.30 on the night in question when McKenzie approached her and told her she would “soon get her head blow off”. The prosecution said the accused’s comments put the woman in fear for her life, which prompted her to file an official complaint with police.

McKenzie was arrested a short time later.

In an interview with police at a nearby station, he denied the allegations. Still, he was charged with the offence because of the evidence produced from further investigations.

When given an opportunity to speak during the hearing, McKenzie told the magistrate he had gone to prison when his ex-girlfriend was pregnant with his child.

He claimed when he was released after spending six years on remand, he didn’t want “anything to do with her”, so she kept filing police reports against him to spite him.

In response, Magistrate Forbes told him that if he felt his ex-girlfriend was trying to falsely accuse him, he should have come to the court to file a restraining order application instead of taking matters into his own hands.

Magistrate Forbes said he considered McKenzie’s “violent history” of antecedents and sentenced him to one month at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
