HARBOUR Island native Lashann Higgs continues to produce impressive numbers, but it’s not all equating to victories for the slumping Socinsa Bembibre in the Spanish Women’s Basketball League.
On Saturday night, Higgs posted a double/double with a side high 17 points and game high 11 rebounds as Bembibre lost a close 61-59 encounter to ASEFA Estudiantes in Madrid.
“I felt as if we competed very hard and we just came up short-handed unfortunately,” Higgs said.
“We performed well and I’m proud of my team for that.”
Higgs, the 5-foot, 9-inch guard out of the University of Texas, played 36 minutes in the game, shooting 4-of- 11 or 36.4 percent from the field, was 2-for-4 (50%) from behind the three-point arch and 3-for-4 (75%) from the free throw line.
The 25-year-old rookie professional player pulled down 10 of her 11 rebounds on the defensive end, dished out a pair of assists and stripped one ball, while committing two fouls and turning the ball over three times.
“I’m always excited to improve,” she said. “It let’s me know that my hard work is paying off and I will continue to work on my game.”
With the loss, Bembibre dropped to 2-12 to match the same win-loss record as Zamarat at the bottom of the 16-team standings. They will play again on Saturday against IDK Estudiantes in the last of three games left this year. That will be followed by a match-up against Gernika on Tuesday, December 22. Their year-ending finale will be played on Sunday, December 27 against Gran Canaria.
In 2021, their first game will be played on Sunday, January 3 against Zaragoza. They will play 11 more games through the remainder of the regular season that will wrap up on Saturday, March 27 when they take on Estudiantes.
“It’s a tough league to play in,” Higgs noted. “Regardless of the circumstances, we work hard and will continue to work hard and improve individually and as a team.”
Despite the team’s dismal showing, Higgs is having a great season offensively. She is sitting sixth in the league in scoring, averaging 14.9 points per game.
As for her individual performance, Higgs said she simply wants to “stay consistent and aggressive the entire game, every game.”
