A 29-year-old man who was accused of assaulting his former girlfriend was ordered to pay her $350 as compensation.

Police said Jason Cooper assaulted the woman at the Golden Gates Plaza on December 17.

He admitted to the offence during a hearing before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

The prosecution said that day, the complainant told police that Cooper beat her about the body during an argument. Officers investigating her complaint arrested the accused a short time later. In an interview with police at the Carmichael Road police station the next day, Cooper denied the allegations.

When given an opportunity to speak during the hearing, he told the magistrate that on the day in question that his ex-girlfriend started to punch him. He claimed he “restrained” her by holding her wrists and pushing her against her car. He also insisted that he did not “pound her against her body” nor did he throw “any punches” at her at the time of the incident.

After listening to his explanation, Magistrate McKinney ordered Cooper to compensate his ex-girlfriend by paying her $350. He also told the accused that he would be required to keep the peace for one year.
