A number of Bahamian female tennis players participated for their respective colleges and university tennis teams over the weekend in the United States.
At Lee University, Sierra Donaldson made her season’s debut as the Flames women’s tennis team defeated Carson-Newman University 5-2.
In her singles match, Donaldson fought back from a 7-6 first-set loss to win the final two sets 6-3 and 7-6 over Vuckovic at the fifth position.
In doubles, Donaldson and Lauren Trammell completed the sweep for their team with a 6-2 score against Alisa Liashova and Klara Vuckovic.
The Lee Flames will be back in action on February 9 against Lees-McRae College.
At Jackson State University, Iesha Shepherd and the Tigers won 4-0 over the LSU Alexandria (LSUA). Shepherd played the #6 singles defeating Katheryne Campos 7-6, 6-2. She also teamed up with the #2 doubles player Zhang of JSU to defeat Perez/Martinez of LSUA 6-2.
The Tigers also played Southeastern Louisiana (SLU) over the weekend. Despite losing 1-4, Shepherd along with Zhang pulled out a win at #2 doubles, defeating Kyra Akinnibi/Katya Cornejo of SLU 6-3.
At Indiana Tech, Abbigail Simms and the Warriors are scheduled for their season opener on February 8.
In January, the Indiana Tech women’s tennis team was picked second in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Coaches’ Preseason Poll. They finished fifth during the 2019 season.
At Bethune-Cookman, Afrika Smith and the Wildcats lost to the Giorgia State University Eagles but Smith played #1 singles and fought hard in a 6-3, 6-2 decision. She also teamed up with Thomas in #2 doubles as they lost 6-2.
At Missouri Valley, Lauryn Daxon and the Vikings are slated to take on Ottawa University on March 1.
At Brescia University, Hannah-Joy Simms and the Beatcats will take on Oakland City University on February 15 in their season opener.
At Asbury, Joshua Turnquest and the Eagles will take on Thomas More Saints at home in their season opener on February 29. Turnquest is in his senior year.
Last year, he was the River State Conference player of the year, earned All-American honors and was ranked 16th nationally.
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association wishes all the Bahamians on the college tennis circuit well during the 2020 tennis collegiate season.
