AZARO Roker and StFX X-Men scored the biggest upset of the Men’s U SPORTS college basketball season with a thrilling win over Shemarr Burrows, Jordan Wilson and the No. 2 ranked Dalhousie Tigers.
The X-Men scored a 78-77 win Saturday to improve to 5-5 and simultaneously handed the Tigers their first loss of the season.
Roker finished with another double double - 11 points and 10 rebounds - while Burrows scored seven points in just 10 minutes off the bench.
The X-Men pulled off the upset just days after a lopsided loss to the Tigers in the first game of the series, 97-54 in the first game of the series last Wednesday.
After a back and forth contest where neither team held more than a two-possession lead for much of the contest, X-Men guard Avan Nava made the go ahead three pointer with just seconds remaining.
At 9-1 the Tigers still remain in first place in Atlantic University Sports conference play.
The X-Men opened the game on a 10-0 run and led 24-22 after the first quarter. They continued to lead 40-38 lead at the half and 60-57 into the fourth.
The Tigers will be back in action on Wednesday, January 15 when they host the Acadia Axemen. StFX will play the same Acadia squad on the road in Wolfville, NS on Sunday, January 19.
Last season, the Tigers finished the regular season 14-5, won the AUS Conference Championship (the fourth in five years) and finished fourth overall in the U Sports Final Eight.
In his final season, Roker increased his numbers across the board and is averaging 16 points and 13.1 rebounds per game to lead the X-Men.
Last season he averaged 10 points and was a conference leader with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots per game.
The X-Men were the No.5 seed in the AUS tournament, but were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
