The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation (BCCEC) has met the new Cuban ambassador to discuss potential business and trade opportunities.
Jeffrey N Beckles, the Chamber’s chief executive, and Charo Morley, its trade services manager, met with Alejandro Garcia del Toro on July 14 with enhanced regional co-operation the basis of their discussions.
“The Caribbean region has to take a collective focus on how to sustain itself in the midst of the current economic environment, especially as it pertains to agriculture, marine resources and technology,” said Mr Beckles.
Ambassador Garcia del Toro offered technical assistance to the government in the areas of fishing and agriculture, and added that Cuba had recently taken steps to reduce its food import dependency.
Mr Beckles also expressed a desire for greater business exchange between both countries. As a result, Ambassador del Toro extended an invitation to the Bahamian business community to attend the Havana International Fair (FIHAV) in 2021. He also committed to fostering exchanges between the Cuban Chamber of Commerce and BCCEC.
Expanding the role of small and medium-sized businesses in the economy, especially around small manufacturing and the creative sector, was also discussed.
