The Bahamas was discovered by Christopher Columbus. In 1492 Columbus sailed the Ocean blue, they had three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. After many years of trying he managed to persuade the King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile to sponsor him to travel across the sea to what is now known as San Salvador, an island in the Bahamas where he discovered a friendly people known as Tainos.

The next island he went to (so I am told) was what we call Long Island. If you look at some of these Long islanders you might catch a glimpse of some of these people!

In certain islands there are statues placed where Columbus may have landed such as on San Salvador and Long Island, etc. The statue in front of the steps leading to the entrance to Government House is very daring of Columbus as he probably did not wear any of the clothes he is depicted in, but nevertheless it is a great statue and I for one will stand in front of it to defend it from all comers!

The reason I am writing this is to state that in Barcelona there is a fantastic statue of Christopher Columbus which is taller than the statue of Horatio Nelson in Trafalgar Square. The base is quite humongous as it houses several portraits of various persons and includes the fact of his voyages. One can go into the base and check out all the facts displayed in the circumference. But the real statue is of Christopher Columbus looking West. Such a shame that we here do not have anything that can compete!
