BFSB elects new Board of Directors

The Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB) elected a new board of Directors to serve for a two-year term (2020-2022) at its recent annual general meeting (AGM).

Elsworth Johnson, minister of financial services, trade and industry and Immigration, gave the keynote address during which he updated attendees on the priority items his ministry is targeting.

These include a streamlined application process at the Department of Immigration, and moving forward with industry-recommended reforms to trust and fiduciary services legislation, as well as plans to introduce a Tax Residency Certificate.

Tanya McCartney, BFSB’S chief executive and executive director, highlighted the Board priorities that include tracking international initiatives impacting the sector and continued promotion and marketing of the jurisdiction amid the COVID 19 pandemic.

She told attendees that BFSB has remained true to its mandate of promoting a greater awareness of The Bahamas’ strengths as an international financial centre (IFC). This, coupled with advocacy for the industry on policy matters, has dominated an agenda that focuses on several broad areas - promotion and marketing; international initiatives; policy and legislation; and stakeholder engagement.

Following the AGM, the Board held its first meeting where the following executives were elected to their posts

  1. Chairman – Kevin Moree, partner at McKinney, Bancroft and Hughes and a member of the firm’s financial services and regulation, litigation and dispute resolution and tax and trade practice groups

  2. Vice-Chairperson – Latonia Symonette-Tinker, principal at The Bayshore Group and former consultant in the Ministry of financial services, trade and industry and Immigration
