AN accountant who was accused of extorting a man out of $75,000 earlier this week was yesterday denied bail ahead of his trial.
Sean Bain, 49, appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt charged with one count each of extortion and fraud by false pretences. The defendant was accused of extorting $75,000 from Paul Baker on September 28, while knowing he was not lawfully authorised to do so.
The prosecution also argued Bain obtained the $75,000 in the form of a Royal Bank of Canada cheque, which was drawn on the account of Lifestyle Construction and paid to him by means of false pretences.
During the hearing, Bain denied both allegations and the matter was adjourned to December 2 for trial.
Due to the nature of the charges, he was denied bail. His attorney, Ian Cargill, told the magistrate he was in the process of applying to a judge in the Supreme Court for his client.
In the meantime, Bain was remanded into custody.
