A 24-year-old man found with three pounds of marijuana was fined $1,200 yesterday.
Jeffrey Pierre appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes after officers found him with several marijuana joints on October 27. He pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of dangerous drug possession with intent to supply.
The prosecution said that around 3.30pm, officers saw Pierre acting in a suspicious manner as he was walking. They searched him and discovered a pink grocery bag containing several foil wraps with suspected marijuana. Pierre was arrested and taken to the Drug Enforcement Unit. In an interview there, he admitted the offence.
Yesterday, Pierre was represented by attorney Jomo Campbell. He told the magistrate that his client had pleaded guilty at his first opportunity because he did not want to waste the court’s time or resources. He also said the accused was unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and so he tried to sell the drugs to make some “quick cash”.
Mr Campbell said since Pierre’s arrest, he has come to realise that selling drugs is not what it is “cracked up to be”.
After accepting Pierre’s guilty plea, Magistrate Forbes fined the accused $1,200 or six months at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.
