Power out for more than 20 hours for some after storm

SOME residents in New Providence were left without power for more than 20 hours after severe weather Sunday night affected Bahamas Power and Light’s systems.

BPL said there were reports of damaged cutouts, blown transformers and low voltage in scattered areas.

In one of several statements issued yesterday, at 4pm BPL said several areas were still left without power due to the bad weather the night before. Emergency teams were said to be at several sites working on restoration.

As of 7pm, power had been restored to Blue Hill/Carmichael Road (with some pending repairs), Durham Street, Chippingham Road, Tyler Street and Marathon Road.

In an 8pm update, more than 10 areas— including Sears Hill, Golden Gates, Bellot Road and Sanford Drive—were still waiting to have electricity restored, with estimated reconnection times varying from 8pm to 11pm last night.

Up to press time, BPL was still working on restoring power in certain areas.
