The Miami Marlins are mired in a seven-game losing streak after sweeps in consecutive series but Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr has been one of the few bright spots offensively for the struggling club.
Chisholm scored the Marlins’ lone run in Sunday afternoon’s 3-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.
In the fourth inning, Chisholm reached base on a fielder’s choice and eventually stole second (his 13th stolen base of the year). He was plated on a Jesus Sanchez RBI double.
Chisholm has hit three home runs (14) in the last six games and has stolen bases in two of his last three games.
His recent run began on August 15 when he hit his 12th home run of the season in a 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.
He finished 2-4 and scored two runs. The next day, Chisholm went 1-4 with a solo home run in a 12-2 loss to Atlanta. He led off the bottom of the first inning with his 13th homer of the year. Chisholm also went 2-4 with a three-run home run and a stolen base in Friday’s 5-3 loss to the Reds. He accounted for half of Miami’s hits on the night, and his eighth-inning shot produced the team’s only runs. It was his first game with a home run and a steal since mid-April.
Over the last 16 games, the 23-year-old infielder is hitting .302 with a .321 OBP and slugging .491.
Despite his individual efforts, the Marlins have struggled and have fallen to the bottom of the National League East in the fifth position at 51-74.
“They seem to be battling,” Miami manager Don Mattingly said when asked about the losing streak. “I know we’re in a tough spot. I know we’re playing different people. I feel like guys are continuing to get ready.”
