THE 1979 Bahamian Golden Gloves team that represented the Bahamas at the Florida/Caribbean Golden Gloves Tournament, Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida was honoured recently by the Retired Boxers Association.
The team consisted of boxers Vincent Strachan, Arthur Buchanan, Stevie Larrimore, Lionel Glinton, Willie Roberts, Sammy Whyms, Ray Mackey and the late Ben Miller. Head coach was the late Boston Blackie Miller, assistant coach was Sonny Boy Rahming and the manager was Alvin Sargent.
The Retired Boxers Association, founded and chaired by Pat Strachan and vice chairman Wellington Miller, hosted the team to a luncheon at Bruno’s on Arawak Cay, on November 21, to celebrate their 40th anniversary reunion.
The master of ceremonies was Charles Major Jr.
Past chairman of the Bahamas Boxing Commission, Alvin Sargent, and Vincent Strachan, president of the Bahamas Boxing Federation, gave remarks. Wellington Miller welcomed the guests and Pat Strachan spoke on behalf of the RBA.
All team members and siblings of deceased members were presented with a framed photograph of the team picture taken in 1979 and a t-shirt with the Retired Boxing Association name and logo. Presentations were done by Tesha Knowles, daughter of former Olympic boxer Nat Knowles - the first Bahamian to win a fight in the 1972 Olympics. The event was well-attended and brought together some members after decades of not seeing each other.
