Student athletes make season debuts in NCAA Indoor Track and Field

SEVERAL Bahamian student athletes made their season debuts as the indoor track and field season got underway at various levels of NCAA competition.

The Purdue track and field programme, headed by Bahamian Norbert Elliot, began their indoor season at the Fred Wilt Open on Saturday at Lambert Fieldhouse in West Lafayette, Indiana.

A pair of jumpers recorded second place finishes in the field for the Big 10 powerhouse.

Senior Tamar Greene was second in the triple jump with his mark of 15.56m (51’ 0.75”) while sophomore Vinajah Adderley was second in the long jump at 5.36m (17’ 7”), The Boilermakers recorded 15 first-place finishes at the meet.

“First of all, I’m just excited that we were able to get on the track,” Elliot said.

“I was really excited and really pleased with some of the good results that we showed today. I think that the kids were really amped up, they had a lot of bottled-up energy, and it was good to see them show it today.”

Up next, the Boilermakers remain at home for the Gene Edmonds Open on Saturday, January 8.

In the Summit League, the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles began its season with the first of its six indoor meets on its schedule - the Bob Timmons Challenge, hosted by the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. Several Bahamian athletes on the Golden Eagles roster recorded top three finishes.

Senior quartermiler Brad Dormeus led the way with a first-place finish in the 400m in 47.94 seconds. He also anchored the 4x400m team that took first place in 3:16.23.

Gabrielle Gibson took first place in the 60mH in 8.50, and second in the 60m in 7.71.

Indea Cartwright was second to Gibson in the 60mH in 8.78. Both were members of the 4x400m relay team which finished fifth in 4:02.55.

Freshman Keithwood Stubbs made his debut and finished fourth in the high jump at 1.85m.

The next meet for ORU is slated for January 14 in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the Arkansas Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas.

Marissa White had an impressive freshman debut for the Temple Owls at the Fast Times Before Finals meet at Rauch Fieldhouse, hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

White finished first in the 400m in a time of 57.62.

The Owls travel to Princeton for the Joe Handelman Invitational on December 12.

In NCAA Division II, Denisha Cartwright began her much anticipated sophomore campaign for the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks with her team’s home win at the Chuck Petersen Open in Mankato, Minnesota.

In the 60m hurdles, Denisha Cartwright finished first with a provisional qualifying time of 8.59 seconds, which currently ranks 2nd in the nation amongst DII athletes.

Samson Colebrooke competed at the Clemson Opener Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina and won the 60m in 6.79.

Daejha Moss finished first in the high jump with a mark of 1.64m at the Dakota Alumni Classic at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Facility in Fargo North Dakota.
