A 54-year-old man was arraigned in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on one count of attempted stealing.

Police arrested Marko Smith after they say he tried to steal the clip and bumper of Desmond Hepburn’s Nissan Note, valued at $250, on December 7.

During yesterday’s hearing, Smith admitted trying to steal the car’s clip, but said he had no intentions of also taking the car’s bumper. “I was starting to go with the clip, but then they caught me,” he told the court.

However, the prosecution said officers believed he tried to steal the car bumper as well since it was attached to the clip, which was found in Smith’s pocket. Smith insisted this was not the case, saying he didn’t want the car’s bumper.

Magistrate Kelly recorded a not guilty plea. She granted the defendant $2,000 bail with one or two sureties despite objections from prosecution.

Magistrate Kelly ordered him to report to the Grove Police Station on Mondays and Fridays before 6pm.

She requested Smith be outfitted with an ankle monitoring device as part of his conditions and adjourned his case to February 2.

Also appearing on similar offences yesterday was 28-year-old Derico Bowe.

Bowe was charged with stealing after police said he stole a grill and one pair of headlights from Kyle Albury’s black Nissan Cube, valued at over $2,000, on May 18. The 28-year-old denied the offence at his hearing before Magistrate Shaka Serville.

Bowe was granted at $2,500 bail with one or two sureties and ordered to report to the Grove Police Station on Saturdays before 7pm.
