Five men on fishing trip rescued

FIVE fishermen whose vessel experienced mechanical problems during a fishing trip were rescued by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and US Coast Guard.

According to the RBDF, the rescue took place on Thursday night.

“After the RBDF Operations Centre received a (distress) call on February 18, 2021 that a 50-ft fishing vessel ‘Alexandria’ was experiencing mechanical problems, HMBS Lignum Vitae under the command of Sub Lieutenant Miska Clarke, along with a fixed-wing aircraft from the USCG were dispatched to assist in the search efforts,” the RBDF said.

“The disabled vessel was eventually located approximately 50 nautical miles southeast of Kemp’s Bay, Andros.

“According to the occupants, they left New Providence for a two-week fishing expedition on Tuesday, February 16, before experiencing mechanical problems (on) their journey. All of the occupants were in fair health when they were rescued.”

The disabled vessel and its five occupants were brought to Nassau.
