WARREN Saunders had the most productive stretch of his young minor league career in the St Lucie Mets’ recent series against the Palm Beach Cardinals in Low-A baseball.
Saunders appeared in five of the six games in the series and hit .550 with 11 hits, two RBI, four runs scored and his first home run of the season.
The teams split the series 3-3 and the Mets improved to a Southeast - East Division leading 20-16 win loss record.
In game one, Saunders hit his first home run of the season, finished 4-5, scored two runs and drove in two RBI in a 12-6 win. His home run came in the eighth inning when his shot travelled 395 feet over the left field wall.
In game two, Saunders went 1-4 in a 5-3 win, followed by a 2-3 night with a run in a 14-8 loss. He recorded his second consecutive multi-hit game when he went 3-4 in a 5-3 win and concluded the series 1-4 with a run in Saturday’s 8-6 loss.
Saunders ended May with a seven-game stretch where he went 11-32 at the plate, with two doubles, one triple, eight RBI and scored seven runs.
He followed with a seven-game hitless streak to begin June, but broke through and is now in the midst of a six-game hit streak.
On the season, Saunders is hitting .277, a .352 OBP, 31 hits, 39 total bases and 14 RBI.
After a day off yesterday, the Mets return to the diamond today when they start a six-game road series at the Jupiter Hammerheads.
First pitch today at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is scheduled for 6:30pm local time.
