THE Pilot Club of Lucaya presented six bicycles and safety helmets for the children at the Grand Bahama Children’s Home yesterday.

Karen Ferguson, governor-elect, said the initiative was spearheaded by Pilot Governor Tiffany Glass in New Providence and the District Administration Council.

She said that Pilot International wants to focus on child safety by ensuring the wearing of helmets whenever they ride their bicycles.

“We are giving helmets to students or children who don’t have helmets. As March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, we want all children to be safe when they ride their bicycles or tricycles.”

Ms Ferguson believes the earlier children start learning how to protect themselves while playing, they will continue this practice as they get older.

She noted that her counterparts in New Providence are doing similar presentations simultaneously in Nassau.

Ms Ferguson said the group is delighted to give back to the children’s home.

Sarah Kirkby, executive director of the home, said the presentation of the bicycles came at the right time.

“We are thrilled to have this donation because our children…have been stuck inside for a very long time when they returned to Freeport in October, and sadly we could not get them back in school because we were worried about COVID-19.”

Ms Kirkby said that they were very short on toys, bikes, and recreation activities at the home.

There are currently 34 children at the facility, Ms Kirkby said, adding that they are now back in school.

“We continue to be amazed by the donations that pour into our home…and we cannot say thank you enough. We thank Pilot and everyone else for what they do for the GB Children’s Home,” she said.
