A MAGISTRATE discharged a man who was arrested for unlawfully carrying arms after he explained the knife he was found with did not exceed the six-inch blade limit stipulated in law.
Macowelly Jones, 22, was arrested after officers found a black handled knife in his possession on March 17.
The court was told that officers were on mobile patrol in the Ross Corner area when they observed Jones riding in a heavily tinted vehicle. After they beckoned for the car to stop, they informed Jones that he would be searched.
During their investigation, officers found the switch blade knife in his right pocket.
When they questioned Jones, he said: “Y’all sissy (N-word) ain’t get nothing to (expletive) do eh?”
The prosecution said Jones was warned to desist his disorderly behaviour, but he continued to use profanities. As a result, he was arrested and charged.
During his hearing before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle Davis, Jones pleaded guilty to unlawfully carrying arms and using obscene language. He also told the magistrate the knife that prompted his arrest was a three-and-a-half inch blade which he was using to clean his fingernails.
Magistrate Rolle Davis noted it was legal to have a knife with a blade that was less than six inches.
As a result, he urged Jones to cooperate with officers when they are questioned him to avoid getting himself in problems and discharged the accused with a warning.
“Exercise good sense in the future,” he told Jones.
