AN American man’s first visit to The Bahamas ended on a low note after he was arrested for attempting to travel back to his home country with $170 worth of marijuana.
Carlton Djam was arrested after American customs officers found 17 grams of Indian hemp in his luggage when they searched it at the Lynden Pindling International airport on November 23.
He pleaded guilty to one count of simple possession during his arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.
The prosecution said that around 6.10pm on the day in question, officers were summoned to the US Border protection office at LPIA. When they arrived, an American officer pointed out Djam, who he said was attempting to board a JetBlue flight to Florida with a jar containing a quantity of marijuana. The court was told that Djam was subsequently arrested and taken to the Drug Enforcement Unit, where he declined to comment during an interview with police.
Yesterday, Djam did not say much when the the magistrate gave him an opportunity to speak, but he did admit that it was his first time travelling to the country.
He was subsequently fined $400. If he doesn’t pay the fine, he could risk being locked up in The Bahamas for two months.
