THE Feeding Bain Grants Town project is appealing for assistance in its efforts to support poeple affected by the economic effects of COVID-19.
In a statement, the project leaders said: “The COVID- 19 pandemic has struck The Bahamas like a tsunami, delivering a devastating blow to tourism, the number one industry, has been reduced to near zero, and the fallout is seriously threatening the national economy.
“As a result tens of thousands of jobs have been lost overnight, with residents becoming over-stressed and fearful as their jobs and other sources of income suddenly evaporated, creating a potentially explosive situation. This is especially true in lower socio-economic communities such as our Bain Grants Town.
“In addition to the deadly health threat, the financial pressure is creating a serious crisis which could lead to social upheaval and public disorder unless properly addressed. The most urgent need of the residents in basic foodstuff.
“The National Feeding Programme has been suspended but thousands have insufficient to eat daily.”
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the project has distributed more than 28,000 emergency food packages, in addition to serving thousands of prepared meals.
Organisers said; “With the crisis continuing, the situation is becoming dire and we are urgently requesting a financial donation, or foodstuff or water in order for us to continue this much needed programme.”
