Jailed for death threat to woman

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN was sentenced to three months in prison yesterday for making death threats against a woman.

Marvin Strachan appeared before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans after being charged with threats of death against Patrice Rolle.

The matter stems from an incident that took place on October 11, 2021. Strachan was accused of knocking on the window of Ms Rolle’s home on Jean Street and was overheard saying “I just should just kill you” when she refused to answer him.

In court, Strachan pleaded guilty to the charges against him but explained to the magistrate that he suffers from bipolar disorder. He said he had been intoxicated after drinking the night before the incident and he had no real intention of harming Ms Rolle.

Strachan has prior antecedents due to a charge of vagrancy and disorderly behaviour. Magistrate Vogt-Evans cautioned him against making such serious threats so casually.

The magistrate accepted Strachan’s guilty plea and sentenced him to three months in prison dating from November 15, 2021. As a result, he will be released from custody on February 15.

In a separate case, another man appeared in court on threats of death charges.

Deangelo Culmer, 32, of Marshall Road, appeared before the magistrate in connection with an incident that occurred on February 7 when he allegedly unlawfully threatened virtual complainant Travolta Chung with death.

Culmer pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He told Magistrate Vogt-Evans he had been behaving and said “people are lying” to try and get him in trouble.

The prosecution had no objection to bail under the condition the accused agreed to avoid any contact with the complainant.

Culmer’s bail was set at $5,000 with one or two sureties and he is expected to report into South Beach Police Station every Sunday before 7pm.

His trial was adjourned to April 14.
