A 66-YEAR-OLD man who denied stealing over $2,000 worth of tools and household supplies from a man earlier this week was yesterday granted $5,000 bail before his trial.
Gary Stubbs appeared before Magistrate Kara Deveaux-Turnquest after he was accused of stealing several tools and other items, including a stihl chainsaw, one laundry faucet set and an air compressor tank from Bernard Minnis on February 7.
Stubbs has denied charges of stealing and receiving.
When the question of bail was brought up, the Crown prosecutor in the case objected to bail being granted, noting the accused’s past antecedents and also the weight of evidence against him.
In view of this, the prosecutor said she felt the accused would reoffend and advised the magistrate against it.
However, Stubbs’ attorney told the court while he considered the prosecutor’s arguments, he didn’t believe his client needed to be remanded.
He noted his last offence was committed in 2018 and was not sufficient evidence to suggest he would reoffend or abscond.
As a result, he asked the magistrate to be lenient and instead grant Stubbs bail with conditions.
Having taken both arguments into consideration, Magistrate Deveaux-Turnquest granted the defendant $5,000 bail with two sureties. He was also ordered to be outfitted with an ankle monitoring bracelet.
The matter was subsequently adjourned to March 28 for trial.
