A WOMAN driver who allegedly struck and killed a male pedestrian on Prospect Ridge on Monday morning turned herself into police yesterday.
Royal Bahamas Police Force Commissioner Paul Rolle gave the update during his annual meet the press event, which was held virtually via Zoom.
“I also wish to advise that the female driver who struck and killed a pedestrian on Prospect Ridge this weekend surrendered to police a short time ago and is assisting with the investigations,” he said.
Police said sometime around 1.30am on Monday, officers were informed about a traffic accident that occurred on Prospect Ridge.
When responding officers arrived in the area, they found a man lying in the street unresponsive who was later pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Services.
Initial investigations of the accident claimed that the man was struck by the driver of a small Japanese vehicle that fled the scene heading west.
Regarding efforts to curb traffic incidents, Commissioner Rolle said yesterday the RBPF’s initiatives led to a 16 percent decrease in traffic fatalities for a second year in a row.
“We conducted thousands of traffic stops and cited motorists that were in violation of traffic laws. We utilised speed guns to monitor our highways and crackdown on reckless drivers as a means to encourage road safety.
“We mobilised officers throughout The Bahamas and issued over 31,000 fixed penalty notices and investigated 9,528 road accidents,” he said.
