PAT Strachan, chairman of the Retired Boxers Association, expressed sadness on the passing of Roger Kelty, calling him “a good friend”.
“I was saddened to learn of his passing. I had communicated with Roger via e-mail to find out he was low. I met Roger over forty years ago. He was a good friend, a good Rotarian and an avid boxing fan and an outstanding boxing judge. He was always the first to offer himself to assist in whatever he could in amateur and professional boxing,” Strachan said.
“He judged hundreds of matches. He was one of the judges when I fought Matthew Saad Muhammad in 1987. He was a member of the Rotary Club of South East Nassau. On behalf of the RBA, I extend condolences to Roger’s family. May his soul rest in peace.”
Wellington Miller, vice-chairman of the RBA, also expressed his condolences to the Kelty family.
“Roger was a great friend to boxing. He served as one of my vice presidents in the Amateur Boxing Association as it was called then. He also served as a judge on many occasions,” Miller recalled. “As VP, he was instrumental in fund-raising activities. Roger came to the Bahamas as a teacher at Queen’s College in the sixties and started a boxing club at the school.”
