Charged over death threats and assault

By PAVEL BAILEY

A MAN appeared in court yesterday charged with making death threats and assaulting a woman with a dangerous instrument.

David Cornish, 35, appeared before Senior Magistrate Samuel McKinney in connection with his arrest for incidents that occurred on January 9 and January 10 when he is first alleged to have made death threats against Shevan Taylor and then subsequently assaulting her with a box cutter.

Cornish pleaded not guilty to both charges and elected to have his trial take place in the Magistrate’s Court. When it came time to discuss bail, however, prosecutor Inspector Timothy Bain noted that Cornish has another trial that is currently being heard in the Supreme Court on charges of attempted murder.

As the prosecutor had no details on Cornish’s bail arrangement with the Supreme Court, Magistrate McKinney remanded the suspect into custody until such details are made available to them.

Cornish is expected to return to court on February 1 for determination on his bail.

In a separate matter, another man appeared in court on death threats and assault with a deadly weapon charges.

Shaquille Burrows, 26, appeared before Magistrate McKinney in connection with his arrest on January 12 for allegedly threatening and assaulting Ladon Nesbitt with a handgun.

In court Burrows pleaded not guilty to both charges against him and elected to have his trial heard in Magistrates Court.

While the magistrate said he did not have to explain the situation behind his arrest to him at this time, Burrows told the court that Mr Nesbitt was his neighbour and that he had also filed identical charges against him. He said Mr Nesbitt had appeared in court for those matters relating to the same incident for which Burrows was arrested.

He also told Magistrate McKinney that both men wished to drop the charges against each other to avoid prison as he wanted to keep his new job at Bamboo Shack to provide for his pregnant girlfriend.

Magistrate McKinney said he would take both men’s wishes to drop the charges into consideration and set Burrows’ bail at $7,000 with one or two suretors.

He is expected to return to court today.
