TWO teenage males were arraigned in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday for stealing $700 during an armed robbery.
Tario McPhee appeared before Magistrate Shaka Serville on his 18th birthday alongside a 17-year-old male defendant for a shared charge of armed robbery.
On July 13 in New Providence, the defendants, while reportedly armed with a handgun, robbed Weizhen Jiang of $700 belonging to Harding’s Food Store.
Due to the nature of the offence, neither defendant was required to enter a plea in court. They were further informed that their case would proceed by way of Voluntary Bill of Indictment (VBI).
While the teenage defendants were denied bail in court, they were told they could apply for it through the Supreme Court, where their trial will ultimately be held.
Until it is granted to them McPhee will be remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDCS), while his co-accused will be remanded to the Simpson Penn Centre for Boys.
The accused are expected to be served their VBIs on October 24.
McPhee further faced an additional charge of attempted armed robbery before Magistrate Algernon Allen Jr.
On July 11 in New Providence McPhee is further accused of attempting to rob Steven Strachan armed with a silver and black .22 Ruger pistol. During this incident McPhee allegedly tried to steal an undetermined amount of cash, which was the property of Rubis Gas Station.
Like his previous charge the defendant was informed that this matter would proceed by way of VBI and that his trial will take place before the Supreme Court.
McPhee is expected to be served his VBI for this charge on October 18.
