AFTER a day off on Wednesday, Team Bahamas returned to competition in the Billie Jean King Cup and they suffered their first loss against host country Dominican Republic yesterday.
Elana Mackey, again playing the opening match, dropped a 6-1, 7-5 decision to Dominican Republic’s Ana Carmen Zamburek in one hour and 22 minutes.
In the #1 rubber match, No.1 seed Sydney Clarke fell short as well, losing 6-0, 6-2 against Kelly Williford from the Dominican Republic in just 54 minutes.
Teaming up for doubles for The Bahamas was Sierra Rodgers and Sydney Clarke, this being Rodgers’ debut. The duo, however, had a tough battle as they lost 6-2, 6-0 to Williford and Chati Reynoso in 55 minutes. With the loss, the team will now play for positioning as it is now out of contention for promotion to Group I. The team is now 2-1 in BJK Cup tournament play.
The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) encourages the team of Clarke, Mackey, Rodgers and player/captain Simone Pratt to continue to play strong as they wrap up competition on Saturday. The team is sponsored by Fidelity Bank and Trust Bahamas Limited.
