A MAN was ordered to attend drug counselling classes after pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s court yesterday to possessing Indian Hemp.

Kiny St Charles, 20, represented by Attorney Glenda Roker, appeared before Magistrate Shaka Serville on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs.

On July 26 in New Providence, the accused was arrested after being found with a small quantity of Indian Hemp. In court St. Charles pleaded guilty to the offence.

During her plea of mitigation, Attorney Roker explained that her client smokes marijuana to cope with stress. She also said he is gainfully employed and is an expectant father. After pointing out that the accused had already been in custody for 48 hours, his lawyer said he regretted his actions and does not want to be on the wrong side of the law again.

His lawyer asked the court not to impose a custodial sentence on St Charles that would blemish his otherwise spotless record.

In view of this, Magistrate Serville granted the accused a conditional discharge. St Charles was placed on six months probation during which time he is expected to attend drug counselling classes at CCAC.

Should the court receive an unsatisfactory report at the end of these courses the accused will be convicted for the present offence and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

St Charles will return to court for mention on January 13, 2023.
