A 25-year-old man who claimed he stole a jumper cable from a man’s vehicle because he was drunk was yesterday ordered to complete 200 hours of community service.

Lynden Williams pleaded guilty to stealing when he appeared before Magistrate Kendra Kelly after police found him with the stolen cable on February 28.

On the day of his arrest Police said Williams told them: “I know I guilty boss.”

When given the opportunity to speak during yesterday’s hearing, the accused told the magistrate that he was intoxicated when he took the item.

He also claimed he didn’t remember where he got the cable from nor any other details about the night.

“I took too much Hennessy at a party. I been out partying,” he said.

Asked if he was an alcoholic, the accused replied “no,” but admitted to smoking occasionally.

Before delivering her sentence, Magistrate Kelly told the accused that she would take into consideration his youth and the fact that his past antecedents were not of a similar nature.

As a result, he was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service.

Williams was told that completing the community service hours would result in an absolute discharge.

The magistrate also cautioned him against re-offending, warning that she would not be as lenient should he appear before her court again.

Also appearing in court on a similar charge was Leslie Knowles, 24.

Knowles was arrested after he tried to break into Valdez Carey’s home on February 27.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted housebreaking during his appearance before Magistrate Kelly.

However, the case was adjourned to tomorrow after the prosecutor told the court the charges may have to be amended given the time the offence took place.

Having heard this, Knowles broke down in tears, asking the court not to send him to jail.

He told the magistrate he was influenced by alcohol when he committed the offence and claimed to have fallen on hard times.

“I was hungry,” he said.

“I don’t live with anyone. I don’t have no clothes, nothing. My stepdaddy kicked me out of the house. My mother dead and I sleep in cars. I even showed (police) the car I sleep in.”

As a result, Knowles was remanded and will return to court on Friday.
