OFFICERS gave testimony yesterday in the ongoing weapons trial of three men.
Shepfield Rose, 25, Kirk Brennen, 22, and Patrick Carey, 27, all appeared before Senior Magistrate Samuel McKinney on charges of possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of a component part of a firearm in relation to an incident on September 11, 2021.
Sergeant Paul Adderley, of Crime Scene Investigations, gave his testimony on that day’s events. He said around 3pm on the day in question, he with other officers noticed the occupants of a grey two-door 2012 Honda Accord (L/P # AJ4900) with the windows down acting suspiciously on the corner of the Fox Hill roundabout. The two occupants of the car were later identified as Rose as the driver and Brennen as the passenger.
After officers asked them to step out of the vehicle and cautioned them that a search would be conducted for dangerous drugs and firearms, they discovered a grey tam in the hood of the vehicle concealing weapons. Sergeant Adderley identified these weapons as a black and grey G2C Taurus and G3C Taurus pistols with both serial numbers erased, as well as a black 9mm extended magazine and 24 live rounds of 9mm ammunition.
In court, photographs of the weapons and car along with a label identifying the officer’s signature were shown as the firearm was still being processed.
Detective Sergeant Davis, during his testimony in court, indicated that the weapons were specifically found in the right corner interior wall frame of the car’s hood and transferred to Elizabeth Estates Police Station for safekeeping with his signature on them. He also indicated that both suspects were extremely calm during discovery of the weapons.
During cross-examination from the defendants’ lawyer Raquel Hyler asked D/S Davis how two of her clients were acting suspiciously to which he said they avoided eye-contact with the officers, while fidgeting and having quick discussions with each other in their seats.
Marco Wood was the final officer to give testimony in court saying that he heard Rose trying to shout out to his mother to contact someone named Rolle during the incident.
When prosecutor Inspector Timothy Bain asked about the suspects’ demeanour at the time of weapons discovery, Officer Wood said Rose looked timid while Brennen looked sad. He also said that he was unaware who the owner of the vehicle was.
In her cross-examination, Ms Hyler asked Officer Wood if he was certain it was Rose who was shouting to which he said no. This led to her saying that the officer was unaware of the fact that Brennen lived near the site of the arrest and as such Ms Hyler stated it was Brennen calling out to his mother not Rose.
She further asked if the officer could recall exactly what street the arrest took place on, to which Officer Wood said he could not recall.
Magistrate McKinney adjourned the case to April 11.
