A POLICE officer gave testimony yesterday during the trial of a 23-year-old man who is accused of indecently assaulting his two nieces.
The accused was in court before Assistant Chief Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans as officer Indira Taylor testified in his indecent assault trial.
It is alleged that the man committed the offences against the 10 and 12-year-old girls in late October of 2021.
During her testimony officer Taylor recalled that during the defendant’s official police interview he claimed to have been under the influence during the time of the incident.
At that time his nieces were allegedly in the room where he slept, however Officer Taylor told the court that the accused claimed he could not recall any further details of the night in question.
After completing the interview, the officer indicated that she signed the Record of Interview (ROI), but said that the accused refused to sign the document himself.
The accused’s attorney, Milton Cox, then asked officer Taylor if his client had the right to refuse to sign the ROI, to which the officer said “yes”.
The accused’s trial is expected to continue on June 30.
