Two face court on drugs charges

By PAVEL BAILEY

TWO men were arraigned in a Magistrate’s Court yesterday on separate drug charges.

Keno Kemp, 31, stood before Senior Magistrate Samuel McKinney on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs.

At 11.30pm on May 15 at Junkanoo Village on Arawak Cay officers on mobile patrol reported that they spotted the accused acting suspiciously. Upon stopping Kemp and searching him, officers found 14 grams of Indian Hemp in his pocket.

In a subsequent police interview, Kemp admitted to the offence and said that he had bought the drugs for $40.

In court, he pleaded guilty to the charge. In view of Kemp’s early plea of guilt and his clean record up to this point, Magistrate McKinney bound him over to keep the peace, failing which he would be fined $500 or spend three months in prison.

The other man, Raquon Johnson, 19, stood before Magistrate McKinney for the original charge of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply before it was reduced to simple possession.

At 6pm on May 16 on Melvern Road, Johnson was arrested by officers on mobile patrol after he was found in possession of one ounce of Indian Hemp contained in 10 foil wrappings. After his arrest the accused admitted to the offence.

In court, Johnson pleaded guilty. He explained that just before his arrest he had just finished working with his father. For his efforts, Johnson’s father gave him $50, which he said he decided to do something “stupid” with, which led to him buying the “weed”.

While Johnson had a prior stealing and receiving charge the Magistrate ruled that he would be placed on an 18-month probation for the offence.

Failing which would result in $500 or three months in prison.
