A MAN was sentenced to 13 months in prison yesterday for stealing $2,500 cash from a woman’s purse.
Ramech Russell, 30, faced Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans on charges of stealing and receiving.
On August 27, Russell was caught on camera stealing $2,500 cash from Deandra Woodside’s purse while at her residence on John Road. After Ms Woodside in the security footage identified the accused as one of her father’s employees, Russell was arrested and later admitted to the offence.
Russell pleaded guilty to the stealing charge in court resulting in the receiving charge being withdrawn.
Taking into consideration his early plea of guilt, Magistrate Vogt-Evans convicted Russell for the offence and sentenced him to serve 13 months in the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDCS).
The magistrate then informed the accused that she sentenced him on the basis that he is a repeat offender, further citing his previous convictions for shop-breaking and stealing.
Before being taken into custody, the magistrate urged Russell to change his ways and to find a trade while in BDCS.
Russell has seven days in which to appeal the sentence.
