AN 18-YEAR-OLD was sentenced to one year in prison yesterday for violating the conditions of his Supreme Court bail on a murder charge.
Q’Shawn Turnquest stood before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans in Magistrate’s Court on charges of violating the conditions of bail.
Between August 18-30, according to his electronic monitoring device (EMD), Turnquest was found outside his residence during his Supreme Court ordered curfew of 8pm to 6am on five occasions.
While Turnquest pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the facts of his case in court, he claimed that his EMD was malfunctioning. He also said that he had reported the issue to the monitoring company.
When the magistrate asked the accused’s mother if she was aware that her son broke curfew, she confirmed that the monitoring company had called her about Turnquest violating his bail conditions last week.
Magistrate Vogt- Evans sentenced the teenager to a year at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services for breaching curfew. He was also ordered to pay a $2,500 fine or risk an additional six months in custody.
